Global Fintech Pioneer Powers Up Business Expansion & Performance with Oracle Exadata
The goal of global fintech enterprises is to scale millions of transactions per day with speed, accuracy, and reliability. When one such organization, a leader in consumer banking and financial services, encountered performance challenges at the soul of its mission-critical systems, they have partnered with Infolob to keep the engine up and running for the current and future performance.
This is where the deep Oracle expertise, thoughtful strategy, and engineering precision has created performance breakthroughs without disrupting business continuity or compliance.
A Fintech Pioneer on the Growth Trajectory
A global fintech organization should manage vast volumes of consumer financial data experiencing exponential growth in both its customer base and daily transaction load. Its legacy IT foundation, though stable, was showing signs of strain, particularly at the database layer that powered core banking operations.
Every day, massive batch processes were run to reconcile, validate, and process financial transactions. Over time, these workloads began exceeding the system’s processing window, causing cascading effects on downstream systems and service-level agreements (SLAs).
The organization had already redirected valuable IT resources toward firefighting to monitor performance, tune applications, and manage infrastructure overhead. But these efforts were only temporary relief. What the environment demanded was a sustainable, high-performance foundation that could scale seamlessly without rewriting existing applications or violating compliance requirements.
Cause of Performance Breakdown
The organization’s Oracle database workloads were hosted on an IBM/AIX platform. Though it was reliable, it was no longer agile enough to keep up with the speed and scale of modern fintech operations.
Despite heavy investments in infrastructure, the system was unable to complete critical daily batch processes within the required five-hour SLA. Instead, these runs extended up to 17 hours, spilling into production time and impacting business continuity.
The complexity was heightened by strict regulatory and compliance constraints. Any material changes to the database or application environment, even minor triggered exhaustive testing and approval cycles that could take weeks or months. This meant the organization couldn’t simply rewrite or optimize code at will.
The challenge at the forefront was clear: Deliver exponential performance improvements within the same functional and regulatory constraints, without touching the database schema or application code.
Engineered Exadata with Proof-of-Value
Rather than directly involved with full deployment, our technical enthusiasts began with a Proof-of-Value, a hallmark of our engineering-first philosophy. the goal was to demonstrate, with empirical evidence, that Oracle Exadata could deliver transformative results under real-world conditions.
Step 1: Proof of Value on Exadata
Our teams deployed a controlled test environment using the Oracle Exadata Database Machine that’s purpose-built for high-performance, high-availability workloads. The POV aimed to replicate the client’s production workloads without altering application logic.
- Target SLA: Batch completion within 5 hours (down from 17 hours)
- Constraint: Absolutely no material database changes allowed
Within the first test cycle, Exadata completed the entire batch process in under 5 hours, meeting the SLA with zero application modifications. Encouraged by the result, our engineers performed further fine-tuning to unlock additional Oracle Database features that had been dormant in the existing setup.
Step 2: Advanced Optimization Using Native Oracle Features
While adhering to regulatory restrictions, we identified and activated two previously unused Oracle performance features that operated within the bank’s “no material change” framework. These optimizations enhanced workload parallelism, data caching, and I/O efficiency.
Due to this, the batch runtime was reduced further — from 17 hours to under 3 hours — all without triggering additional validation or testing cycles.
Secure, Seamless, and Scalable Migration and Modernization
With the POV proving Exadata’s capabilities, we orchestrated a seamless migration from IBM/AIX to Oracle Exadata during a routine maintenance window, ensuring zero disruption to ongoing operations.
The migration strategy emphasized speed, compliance, and risk mitigation, leveraging well-established playbooks for mission-critical financial workloads. Once live, the Exadata platform demonstrated exceptional stability and performance from day one.
Over a brief burn-in period, performance continued to improve as workloads stabilized. Freed from constant tuning and troubleshooting, the client’s IT team could finally refocus on innovation and feature development, rather than infrastructure management.
Efficiency Scaled, Growth Multiplied
Our potential synergy has reshaped how the organization managed data, resources, and costs in no time:
- SLA Achievement and Predictability: Daily processing, which once risked SLA violations, now consistently completes well within the mandated time window, restoring confidence in operational reliability and customer delivery.
- Operational Efficiency and Focus: With performance issues solved, the performance management team could pivot its attention to innovation in developing new features and improving customer experience rather than working on system delays.
- Cost and Infrastructure Optimization: The new Exadata environment allowed the organization to consolidate multiple databases onto fewer nodes, effectively doubling usable CPU capacity without increasing licensing costs. On the previous IBM platform, each Oracle license supported one CPU. Under Linux on Exadata, Oracle licensing permitted two CPUs per license, an instant cutting of license costs by half while doubling compute efficiency.
- Reduced Footprint and Higher Density: Database consolidation enabled a smaller physical footprint, lower power consumption, and simpler management while improving performance scalability for future workloads.
- Future-Ready Architecture: The Exadata foundation, built on Oracle Linux, provided a seamless path toward hybrid and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) readiness, allowing the organization to scale elastically as data demands grow.
It was a business enablement for us where it became a quest for performance and model for modernization.
